Mike's Journey

What is your Sober Date? Tell us a short paragraph on how you are living your best life now post addiction and recovery?

I don’t like to focus on a certain date. I like to feel like I am starting over each day so I never feel like I have Recovery in the bag. For me, if the number of days becomes my primary focus, the having a daily sober mind fades and relapse becomes more likely. (Personal experience)
By living my best life, I am eating healthy, working out almost every day, making good on all of my commitments, reading more and being obsessed with self-improvement, being very active in my church and trying to find any way I can to help others who are having their lives robbed by addiction.

How did addiction keep you from living your best life?

I isolated, preventing myself from creating new relationships or strengthening current ones, I ate poorly and threw away all of my progress in the gym (stopped going as well), carried so much guilt and shame around work that my performance almost got me fired, was throwing away all of my money and was a shell of the person I was supposed to be. My face was starting to flush all the time and my eyes were always looking sunken, I was basically a zombie at all times. Either hungover or drunk, 24/7 for almost a decade.

What and who guided you toward an addiction free journey?

Jesus Christ.

What plan and steps did you take to get out of addiction?

Listening to Recovery podcasts at work, AA meetings, Instagram Recovery Community, being transparent with those closest to me about my addiction, routine checkups at the doctor, getting involved with a church, reading books about recovery. OWNING BY BULLSHIT AND OWNING BY SOBRIETY!

When did you decide it was time to take action?

When I woke up on a cold jail cell floor and had no memory of why I was there.

What was at stake for you if you didn't take these actions to get sober?

My new job and the security clearance I needed to maintain it. Ever holding down a long term relationship with a woman. My overall health and duration of life.

For someone in the same situation as you were who wants to get clean, what would you want to tell them?

The best day to quit is today.
Do try to date until you truly love yourself. (Major reason why I landed in jail)
It is best to not try to get clean where you used to be dirty. (Different playground, different playmates.)
